The joys of the outdoors include many things… sunshine, ocean waves, flora and fauna, and sweat. Let’s not try to be glamorous right now… in these hot, summery conditions, we’re sweating a lot these days.

Dearest D-RAVEL Travelers,

With COVID lockdowns having kept us in our houses all of spring and into early summer, it’s no surprise that everyone is jumping at the chance to be outside and walk in the park or hike on a trail. Due to concerns of flying during the pandemic, many have enjoyed the nature around them and made road trips through the flyover states to reach their destinations. Well, no matter if you’re hiking through the mountainous trails of Arizona, exploring downtowns under the sweltering heat, or even just relaxing by the water, I have few beauty products to put you onto for a sweat-proof look.

Not everyone likes to wear makeup if they’re going to be adventuring for the day, I can’t even say that I would wear a full face if I knew sweating was in the cards. However, everyone needs a few water-and sweat-proof products to aid them through the summer, so why not share some of my secrets? (And if you do wear a full face on these humid days, you’re killing it. And if you wear none at all, guess what? You’re still killing it!) Hi, my name is Alyssa (@alyssabrascia), and these are my recommended sweat-proof beauty products for your next adventure.

Waterproof Eyeliner

I feel like this eyeliner is bulletproof, at this point. My trusty Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in the shade Trooper is my everyday go-to because this product can do no wrong. When I tell you this waterproof eyeliner does not budge, I truly mean it. This is morbid, but there is an image that was posted as a review for this product that a girl took of herself post-car wreck and hospitalized… with her eyeliner still in perfect condition. Her whole post was a tribute to how insane this product is because her wing was still perfectly flicked after her accident. If that isn’t dedication to a product, I don’t know what is.

Neutrogena makeup wipe

But don’t worry, this liner shouldn’t carry the stigma of permanent marker. I’ve found that with the help of a Neutrogena makeup wipe, this liner comes off like cake. But as for the heat, the pool, the ocean water and your own sweat, you’ll still have a perfect cat eye all day. Though this product retails for a little higher of a price at $21, there’s a lot of bang for your buck. The odds are ever in your favor with this product!

Waterproof Mascara

Mascara is the easiest product to throw on when you want just a little bit of makeup for the day, and this is usually my go-to on sweaty days. With the millions of waterproof mascaras offered out there, I’ve found that it’s not worth it to spend the big bucks on waterproof mascara, as they generally all serve the same purpose. Maybelline’s Great Lash Waterproof Mascara has been my mascara of choice for years on days that I know my makeup could run, and its price point of $6.99 is hard to beat. Simply curl your lashes, swipe the wand and sweat it out!

I will warn you, however, this product is a bit hard to get off at the end of the day. It does its job so well that even makeup wipes are a foe, but with enough facial cleanser and gentle wipe usage, your eyelashes will be good as new.

Primer

I never really believed in the power of primer until I was introduced to Smashbox’s Photo Finish Pore Minimizing Primer, which retails for $39. If you so choose to wear foundation or concealer over this primer, you’ll see your pores disappear and your products apply so much smoother than on bare skin. Not only does this primer keep your products in place (even in the heat), but you’ll see your look last all day long.

LYS TIP:

On days where I want a blurred look but don’t want the weight of face makeup, I’ll apply this primer alone to the areas under my eyes, over my T-zone and a bit on my chin. This instantly eliminates shine and creates a smoothed effect, ridding of the need for additional makeup to clog your pores in the sun.

Though this product is on the more expensive side, there is so much value within its small, purple packaging. As only a little bit of primer goes a long way, this one tube will last many months to even a year, depending on how often it is used (always be aware of expiration dates, however). Its small size also makes it easy to pack in a travel makeup pouch to be thrown into your bag for your upcoming adventure.

Lip Stain

Anyone remember when lip stains were all the rage circa 2014? Well, I never really let this product go because of how revolutionary it was to my all-day makeup game. I purchased Revlon’s Balm Stain at Target when I was about 14 and have been a loyal fan ever since. Unfortunately this particular product has been discontinued, but lip stains in general are a must-have when trying to beat the heat and still keep that perfect pout.

LYS TIP:

While you definitely can swipe on a lip stain like Chapstick if you want a bolder look, I recommend lightly dabbing your balm to the lips to create a bitten look that errs on the natural side. Remember that since it’s a stain that it will last all day, even through water breaks! Dab the color on lightly – you can always build it up to your desired shade. Look for a product with moisturizing elements, such as the Revlon product, to make sure your lips stay hydrated all day long.

Setting Spray

I would be remiss to forget the finishing touch on any makeup look, but especially one you’re trying to sweat-proof, which is setting spray. In particular, Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray, which is sold for $33.

This setting spray is said to hold your look locked in place for 16 hours, and to my experience, Urban Decay is true to their word. If you blended in some concealer for a sizzling day out on the town, you’ll definitely want to top that off with some of this spray. You can even purchase travel sizes of this product for $15 at your local Sephora or Ulta so you can bring this baby anywhere. Just because you feel like you’re melting doesn’t mean your makeup has to!

While many prefer to opt for no makeup on sweltering days, that doesn’t mean you have to if you feel like sprucing yourself up a bit (or simply just love applying makeup, like me). Sweaty days don’t have to equal ruined makeup looks, and these products are proof of that statement. Let us know what you think if you try any of these looks and where you traveled that required some sweat-proofing! Hope you enjoyed our 5 sweat-proof beauty products for your next adventure!
